Support for moms who can’t breastfeed?
Posted by Gaby Donnell on Tue, April 28th 2009 in Breastfeeding ()
From the time my son was born, we have had trouble breastfeeding. He was a large baby at birth with low blood sugar so they gave him formula an hour after he was born. He was very hungry before my milk came in and had to have a little formula. We saw the lactation consultants often. We struggled through breastfeeding before finding out he was tongue tied. He had a frenulectomy (cutting of the frenulum) which after a few weeks did help him latch on better. I seemed to have trouble with supply so I did everything I could… fenugreek, mother’s milk, oatmeal, avocado. I was also nursing him for 40 minutes, then pumping 20 minutes, then bottle feeding my milk and formula to keep him satisfied. I did this every 2 to 3 hours!! Very tiring.
Anyway, I continued as best I could for months. We even used donated breast milk for him. I went back to work and nursing became even more difficult. At 5 and a half months, we are now only using formula.
Portland has a great breastfeeding community. I always thought I would be part of it. Now that I am not, I sometimes feel like a bad mom. Everyone asks “Are you breastfeeding?” The guilt resurfaces and I have to explain my situation again.
So… my question is this: Are there any support groups for moms who can’t breastfeed and have had to resort to formula? There is so much support for the breastfeeding moms which is great, but us other moms also need support!!

Weaning and calcium intake for my infant
Posted by Kimberly Bepler on Wed, April 22nd 2009 in Infant Feeding ()
Hello! I am trying to wean my 13-month-old boy, as I will be going out of the country for ten days on business and he will be staying at home with my husband.
I now breastfeed him twice a day, in the morning and just before going to bed at night. He eats well and happily drinks water from a sippy cup throughout the day, but absolutely refuses to drink any cow’s milk from either bottle or cup. I have tried soy milk and chocolate milk, but while he is a bit more receptive to these, he will only take a couple of small sips – not nearly as much milk as he would drink when breastfeeding.
Should I continue to gradually cut out each of the two remaining feeds, even if this means he will probably drink very little milk? Is it ok to give him extra yogurt, milk in his cereal, cheese etc to maintain his calcium intake? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Many thanks and look forward to hearing from you.

My baby has reflux!
Posted by Beth Yohalem Ilsley on Wed, April 22nd 2009 in Infant Feeding ()
My son was recently diagnosed with reflux. He is exclusively breast fed. I am wondering if there is anything in my diet that could be exacerbating the problem or any foods/beverages I should be staying away from. He is 18 weeks old.
Thanks!
